Resounding Voices: Celebrating Community, Creativity, and the Power of Song

Back in early 2017, a small group of passionate volunteers came together in Rochester, Minnesota, with a big idea: to create a dementia-friendly choir that would empower and uplift individuals living with dementia. Using the Giving Voice Toolkit and support from Giving Voice, their grassroots dream became a reality—and just like that, Resounding Voices was born.

What started as a simple community initiative quickly grew into a vibrant nonprofit organization with a clear and powerful mission: to celebrate the full potential of people living with dementia through music, creativity, and connection. Now entering its 8th year, Resounding Voices is stronger than ever, with about 60 members who gather regularly to sing, laugh, and share the joy of music.

Meet the Team Behind the Music

The heart of Resounding Voices beats thanks to an incredible team of dedicated individuals:

• Suzy Johnson, Artistic Director, brings her talents as a choral director, arranger, and composer to create a musical experience that’s both meaningful and fun.

• Karen Rorie, Program Coordinator, keeps everything running smoothly with her background in administrative support and marketing.

• Bruce Rohde and Jan Matson, accomplished pianists and musicians, support the choir as its beloved accompanists.

Together, they form a team that’s not only highly skilled but deeply committed to creating a welcoming, engaging environment for every member of the choir.

Music with Meaning

One of the unique aspects of Resounding Voices is its use of a semester-long theme, which infuses every rehearsal, communication, and social gathering with purpose and playfulness. Artistic Director Suzy Johnson shares that “the theme is just a really fun way to guide everything that has to happen in a semester.” These themes help give shape to the experience, fostering a sense of journey and cohesion among the singers.

Another much-anticipated event each year is the fall collaborative concert with a local choir. This annual performance offers choir members a chance to share the stage with other singers, deepen community ties, and showcase the joy that Resounding Voices brings to all who participate.

Fall Semester Is Just Around the Corner

With fall on the horizon, the excitement is building once again. In just a few days—on Tuesday, September 9th—Resounding Voices officially kicks off its new semester with the lively theme: "Traveling the USA." Expect songs, stories, and maybe even a few dance moves inspired by iconic places and experiences across the country.
